Student by day, blogger by night?

I can’t believe I have a blog! I’m very excited and a little confused by this whole thing. I’ve been wanting to start one of these for a while since I love writing and do it constantly, but the thought of posting my words on the Internet was a little bit scary.

This summer, however, I truly became a Vegan. Capital v and all, I shed the animal layers (and extra pounds) I had been clinging to since childhood. I switched to soy milk about four years ago, but the decision to go vegetarian happened in March. I had just finished a turkey sandwich in my college’s dining hall, when I began to feel a little sick. I have ridiculously sensitive skin, so I’m used to inexplicable allergic reactions, but I was surprised to feel a hive forming on my left cheek. Turkey had been a staple in my diet for years, but as I revisited my meal, I realized it was the primary cause of my discomfort. It was the first time I confronted the fact that in between complaining about my sensitive skin and stomach problems, I had been shoving dead animals down my throat.

I gave up meat the next day. Honestly, it was one of the easiest things I’ve ever done. Like a good student, I did my homework and learned about natural sources of protein, like beans, grains and lentils. The nausea slowly dissipated, and my skin remained unblemished.

I’ve always been very body conscious, exercising and dieting like a fiend since high school, but becoming a vegan has helped me realize that taking care of my body is not a diet…it’s a way of life.

So, in conclusion…welcome to my blog! I’ll be posting about food, exercise and everything in between.

PS. Apparently sauerkraut is super healthy. Who knew? I picked up a fresh container at my local farmer’s market this week…YUM. Definitely pairing it with some barbecued soy dogs this weekend :).
